World Hearing Day
What is World Hearing Day?
Health care organizations and the World Health Organization (WHO) organized World Hearing Day to spread awareness on hearing loss and what can be done to care for those who suffer from it. Currently, the WHO states that millions of individuals are faced with hearing impairment which could have been treated by health care organizations.
What Causes Hearing Loss
Hearing loss is defined as a condition that causes partial or full inability to hear. According to the WHO, one in three adults over the age 65 suffer from some level of hearing loss. While it is normal for individuals to experience a slight decline in hearing as they age, exposure to loud noises, viral infections, and more can cause more severe levels of hearing loss.
Prevent Hearing Impairment
There are some tips an individual can employ to stay safe even in noisy environments. First, you should limit the amount of time spent in noisy environments. When attending events such as sporting events or concerts, wear earplugs to protect your eardrums from damage.
If you wish to stay safe while using your headphones, consider lowering the volume of what you’re listening to to less than 60%. Also, try to invest in noise cancelling headphones which can help you keep the volume down. Lastly, take regular breaks from your hearing aids to give your ears a rest.
Children and Safe Listening
The WHO has frequently reminded parents to ensure the safety of their children when it comes to safe listening. It advises parents to limit their children when it comes to using headphones. The WHO and other health care facilities encourage children to listen to constructive messages that explain the risks of hearing loss and how to prevent it. Washing and use of eardrops, hearing aid and implants can be used for treatment.
