How to Host a Hearing-Friendly Holiday Dinner

Since you want all of your guests to be comfortable and happy at your event, consider these tips to keep your holiday dinner hearing-friendly.

If you are hosting a get-together this holiday season, at least one of your guests may be hearing impaired. Since you want all of your guests to be comfortable and happy at your event, consider these tips to keep your holiday dinner hearing-friendly.

Use a Round Table

Round tables are perfect for dinners for guests who are hearing impaired. When you sit at a round table, you’ll be able to look at everyone’s face, which is invaluable for anyone who needs to be able to read lips to follow a conversation.

Break Up the Party into Several Rooms

While it might seem easier to have most of your guests in one central location, that isn’t conducive to those who are hard-of-hearing. Even someone who wears a hearing aid will have trouble focusing on one conversation in a crowded room. Break the party up into several separate rooms so those who need a quieter and less-crowded environment can have a place to go if they want to have a private conversation.

Keep the Music Volume Low

Playing music may be a great way to liven up a party, but it can be a huge distraction to someone who relies on a hearing aid to focus on a specific sound. If you must have music playing at your party, keep the volume low. Any music you play should register as background noise. If you aren’t sure you can keep your music at a reasonable volume for all of your guests, go without music for your party. It’s better to have your guests be able to converse amongst themselves.

Use Plasticware and Cups

Unless you’re having a formal dinner, use plastic utensils and cups instead of silverware and wine glasses. They are much quieter than your regular utensils, so they won’t distract anyone who might be hard-of-hearing. Plus, it will make it a lot easier to wash your dishes at the end of the night.
